Chiefs experience a scary moment with star QB Patrick Mahomes in Week 9 game vs. Buccaneers

The Kansas City Chiefs tied things up at 17-17 in the fourth quarter of their Week 9 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but it came at a cost.

With the rain really coming down, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes took off running third-and-goal. As he flipped the ball to RB Samaje Perine for the touchdown, he suffered what appeared to be a non-contact left ankle injury. Mahomes had previously dealt with an ankle injury in Week 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders and was listed on the injury report all week with that injury.

Mahomes went to the ground and was unable to get up under his own power. His teammates helped him up, and he seemingly said “I’m fine.” However, Mahomes then needed help to the sideline from the training staff.

He briefly went into the blue medical tent on the sideline. He had his ankle taped up with a fresh tape job when he emerged. He then appeared to speak to Chiefs backup QB Carson Wentz telling him that he was fine.

ESPN’s Lisa Salters reported from the sideline that the Chiefs’ training staff gave her the thumbs up, indicating that Mahomes was OK and cleared to return to the game. The Buccaneers went 3-and-out in just 91 seconds and Mahomes was able to return to the game without missing a single snap.

A scary moment for Chiefs Kingdom, but a sigh of relief knowing that Mahomes was able to return.
