Mike McCarthy’s time in Dallas might not be over after all.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the belief around the league is that Mike McCarthy is “safe” and will likely return as the Cowboys head coach in 2025.
Sunday night’s performance was viewed as a positive sign that the Cowboys players support McCarthy. When Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer asked McCarthy about maintaining a strong connection with his players, he revealed that he would voluntarily step down as head coach if that wasn’t the case.
“I mean, absolutely. To be frank with you, if I didn’t feel that way, then I would leave,” McCarthy said. “Where I am in my career, I’m fortunate enough to be in a place, and a space mentally and emotionally, where I can make that choice. But yeah, if I didn’t feel that I was connected [with the players] and putting us in the best position to win, then I would step aside.”
Now, it sounds like McCarthy will have the opportunity to continue his tenure in Dallas as the team tries to regroup for a potential playoff run in 2025.
The next two weeks could go a long way toward determining McCarthy’s future, so the Cowboys will try to keep the momentum going in the right direction when they return to action on Sunday in an NFC East clash against the Philadelphia Eagles.
