Aaron Rodgers is now thought to be seriously considering retirement, as the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have made no secret of their desire to sign him, have not heard back from him since they met last month.
The parties met on March 21, and team owner Art Rooney has said they’re willing to wait on the quarterback. But, as of Thursday morning, Rodgers had not given the organization an update, with the NFL Draft just a week away.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the team has no clue what Rodgers plans to do.
“I can tell you, I spoke to Pittsburgh this morning,” Russini told ‘The Herd’. “No updates right now. At this point, as we’re a week out from the draft, they still have no idea whether or not Aaron Rodgers is gonna sign with them.”
CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkabwla also notes that Rodgers is not going to play just for playing’s sake in 2025 and wants to sign for a contender. She even stated that, at this point, “Rodgers is more likely to retire than sign with a team that’s not a Super Bowl contender.”
While he has remained in communication with the Steelers franchise, he has not given them an update.

Rodgers has already visited Pittsburgh and worked out with their new wide receiver, DK Metcalf, but it appears he’s keen on delaying his decision until the draft.
That could be because of what happened to Kirk Cousins last year. The quarterback signed with the Atlanta Falcons at the soonest opportunity after becoming a free agent, only to be blindsided by them drafting Michael Penix Jr. in the first round.
“Aaron Rodgers is 41 years old, has made nearly $400M and is intellectually stimulated by more than football. From every convo I myself had with him about trying to mold/shape/push a Jets team NOT on the brink of a Super Bowl to every convo I’ve had with execs trying to woo him this offseason, it’s extremely clear Rodgers is not going to play just for the sake of playing,” Kinkabwala said.
The Steelers are still prepared to wait, but it seems that the longer they wait, the less likely it is that Aaron Rodgers will sign with them.
