Karmelo Anthony’s lawyer has suggested that there will be no doubt in the jury’s mind that the teenager was defending himself when he killed Austin Metcalf.

Anthony has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge for Metcalf’s slaying following his arrest for the fatal stabbing earlier this year. He stands accused of and has confessed to the killing and will soon have his day in court.

While the youngster, now 18, has admitted to stabbing Metcalf, he told police he was defending himself. And his lawyer, Mike Howard, is confident that will become clear once the trial gets underway.

“It’s only in a trial that a jury would hear the full story, one that includes critical facts and context that the grand jury simply didn’t get to hear,” Howard said, per ABC 11.

“We expect that when the full story is heard, the prosecution will not be able to rule out the reasonable doubt that Karmleo Anthony may have acted in self-defense.”

According to eyewitnesses, the altercation between Karmelo Anthony and Austin Metcalf stemmed from a disagreement over seating during a track meet between their two schools. Anthony was asked to leave a seating area and made a conditional threat, telling Austin, “Touch me and see what happens.”

He is said to have pulled a knife out of his bag after Austin grabbed him, then “stabbed Austin once in the chest and then ran away.”

A trial date has not yet been set.
