College Baseball Team Suffers Horrific Tragedy – One Dead, 32 Injured During Crash En Route To Season Opener

Season opener trip ends in tragedy for college team.

A bus carrying the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team crashed on Wednesday morning in northwest Iowa. One person died, and 32 others suffered injuries.

The crash happened shortly after 11 am on Highway 4 near Twin Lakes, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The team was traveling south to play games against North Arkansas College on Thursday and Friday when the bus went off the road.

Emergency teams quickly reached the crash site and found the bus badly damaged. First responders treated many players and staff members on the roadside before taking them to nearby hospitals.

Investigation Underway As Iowa Community Mourns

The crash injured so many people that officials had to call several medical helicopters. They flew the most seriously hurt victims to trauma centers for surgery. Officers from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and Rockwell City Police helped rescue people from the wreck and arrange transport.

Authorities have not shared the name of the person who died yet. They said they want to inform the family first. Investigators also have not confirmed if the victim was a player, coach, or the driver.

The Iowa State Patrol is still investigating what caused the crash. So far, officials have not said if weather or mechanical problems played a role.

Leaders from both colleges shared their sadness after hearing the news.

“Our hearts are heavy as we grieve alongside the Iowa Lakes College community. The loss of a life is a tragedy that reaches far beyond one campus,” a statement said.

Dr. Rick Massengale, president of North Arkansas College, offered support to the Iowa school. He extended his “deepest condolences” to the family and loved ones of the person who died.

“We are lifting up in prayer those who were injured and all who are affected,” Massengale said. “During moments like this, we are reminded that the higher education community is a family.”

Iowa Representative Randy Feenstra said he felt “deeply concerned” about the crash. He thanked local responders for their fast action.

“I am grateful to our local law enforcement, Iowa state patrol, and medical professionals who have been quickly responding at the scene,” Feenstra said.

The team planned to start its season in Arkansas this week. Instead, players, coaches, and families now face a difficult recovery while officials continue investigating the tragic accident.
