President Donald Trump was asked whether he feels safe after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as he left Washington, D.C., to travel to Florida for his first public event since the shooting on Saturday, April 25.
Trump was flying down on Friday, May 1, to deliver the keynote address for the Forum Club of the Palm Beaches’ 50th anniversary dinner. Before he boarded Marine One, he stopped to talk to reporters on a range of topics, including the war in Iran, the upcoming White House UFC fight, and King Charles’ recently concluded visit.
“This is going to be your first big public event since somebody tried to kill you on Saturday. Do you feel safe going to something like this today?” asked Fox News’ Peter Doocy.
Trump said, “I don’t even think about it, Peter,” and tapped Doocy’s microphone with his left hand before walking away with a smile.
“This is the first time a President has ever high-fived our microphone,” Doocy later wrote on X.
Federal prosecutors have charged Cole Tomas Allen, 31, with attempting to assassinate Trump and two federal gun crimes.
Authorities have released video they allege shows the California man attempting to storm the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday in a bid to assassinate the president and other senior administration officials.
The president, along with first lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance, attended the annual fundraiser hosted by the reporters who cover the White House.
Secret Service agents quickly evacuated the Trumps, Vance, and other Cabinet members from the chaotic scene.
Officials have said the gunman never made it to the doors of the room where the president and scores of journalists and politicians were gathered. Secret Service stopped him after he allegedly shot one officer, who was spared severe harm by a bulletproof vest.
For his part, Trump has not appeared particularly rattled by the third apparent attempt on his life since 2024.
