Ohio State’s preparation for its game against Washington has likely been dampened by some devastating news, with the body of a dead student having been found at its Ohio Stadium.
The Buckeyes will not be playing at home this Saturday, with the fixture scheduled to take place at Husky Stadium, but spirits will probably be low.
According to university spokesperson Ben Johnson, a 19-year-old student named William Mayfield was found dead at the grounds on Friday. Mayfield was from Fairfield, Connecticut.
Ohio Stadium Experiences Second Tragedy In Over A Year
No foul play was suspected after the body was found, while there’s no ongoing threat on campus.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Counseling and Consultation Services are available for students in need of support by calling 614-292-5766,” Johnson said in an email sent to The Columbus Dispatch.
“A Columbus fire spokesperson said firefighters received an initial call to the scene at 9:56 a.m. A reporter at the stadium said investigators began breaking down its perimeter in the parking lot shortly after noon,” the outlet noted.
Cordon tape remained in the area where investigators found the body through Friday.
The news comes over a year after a woman fell to her death during the spring commencement ceremony at Ohio Stadium over a year ago. It also follows more recent news of a former Buckeyes team captain being arrested for an assault that left the victim fighting for their life.
Our hearts go out to everyone affected by these tragic circumstances.
