He had been divorced for several years.
Police have identified the shooter who opened fire at a high school hockey game in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on Monday.
The gunman in question killed two people and left three others critically injured.
Authorities have revealed his identity, naming him as Robert Dorgan, a transgender father who also went by the female alias Roberta Esposito.
Court documents obtained by local outlet WPRI show the shooter had gender reassignment surgery in 2020.
“We have identified the person, the suspect, by a birth name, the birth name was Robert Dorgan,” Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves told a press conference on Monday. “We have also learned that the person does go by the name of Roberta, also uses a last name of Esposito.”
Dorgan had responded to an anti-trans Twitter/X post the night before his shocking act, writing, “keep bashing us. but do not wonder why we Go BERSERK.”
One of Dorgan’s children, a North Providence High School senior, was playing in the hockey game on Monday.
Robert Dorgan’s Daughter Says He Had “Mental Health Issues”
WPRI notes that the suspect’s transgender identity was the cause of several family court battles over the years. According to the police, the shooting resulted from a domestic dispute.
Court documents show his ex-wife filed for divorce in 2020, citing “gender reassignment surgery, narcissistic + personality disorder traits,”
She later amended her filing, saying the reason was “irreconcilable differences which have caused the immediate breakdown of the marriage.”
They finalized the divorce in 2021.
WPRI reports that Dorgan killed the mother of his son who was playing in the game and the player’s sibling. Whether the woman he killed was the ex-wife mentioned above remains unclear.
Dorgan was reportedly armed with multiple guns at the ice rink on Monday. He took his own life after killing his two victims and wounding others.
A woman seen leaving the Pawtucket police station after the incident said the gunman was her father.
She claimed he was“very sick” and had “mental health issues.”
“He shot my family, and he’s dead now,” she said.
