The driver who was allegedly drunk when he slammed into and killed National Hockey League star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother had a shocking admission amid his arrest.
NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were killed Thursday night while biking when a suspected drunk driver hit them.
Gaudreau and Matthew were riding north on County Road 551 in Oldmans Township when a man driving an SUV tried to pass two other vehicles and struck them, according to New Jersey State Police.
The accident was so bad that both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.
We are now finding out more information on what happened after that tragic accident.
43-year-old Sean M. Higgins was charged with two counts of second-degree death by auto and told police he consumed “approximately 5-6 beers prior to the accident,” according to NJ.com.
Higgins further admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages “prior to and while operating his vehicle” and said his drinking “contributed to his impatience and reckless driving,” state police noted.
Higgins was taken into custody at the scene after he failed a field sobriety test following the death of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew.

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his 29-year-old brother Matthew tragically passed away after they were killed while bicycling in southern New Jersey Thursday night.
The Gaudreau brothers were cycling on a road in Oldmans Township, N.J., near their hometown.

The two men were planning to attend their sister’s wedding in New Jersey on Friday as they were picked to be groomsmen.
Johnny was a winger for the Columbus Blue Jackets, who was drafted in 2011 by the Calgary Flames.
Matthew Gaudreau played for the Worcester Railers, a minor league team in the ECHL, during the 2021-22 season.
