Phoenix Mercury guard Sophie Cunningham seemed to run into a scary moment on Friday.
The Phoenix Mercury are off from playing a game on Friday, but the players still needed to head to practice to get ready to face the WNBA reigning champion, Las Vegas Aces, who will be at the Footprint Center on Sunday.
On Thursday afternoon, Sophie Cunningham took to her Instagram story and stated that she ran into issues heading into practice because she was being followed by a cop.
“Had a cop follow me all the way to practice and now stuck behind two fire trucks…1000% will be late for practice, great start Soph,” she said on her Instagram story.
Cunningham did not provide any further context to the situation.
In the meantime, the Mercury are currently 16-16, which is good enough to hold the No. 6 spot in the WNBA standings.
They desperately need to win their next game to stay above .500 and secure a spot in the postseason.
Mercury Guard Sophie Cunningham Demands Ref Take Accountability After She Was Ejected in Previous Game
Earlier this week, the Phoenix Mercury suffered a tough loss to the Minnesota Lynx at home.
This was despite Sophie Cunningham scoring 16 points with six rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench.
Things were going well until minutes left in the fourth quarter when Cunningham was assessed two technical fouls.
She was ejected from the game right after she had scored two points and was fouled on the play.

In the postgame press conference, Sophie Cunningham spoke on the situation, demanding accountability from the officials.
“I think it’s a good question for the Player’s Association to maybe see the ref situation and how we can be better moving forward,” Cunningham said. “As a group, we get fined for a lot of stuff. But I think they need to be held accountable, too.”
