Fans praise Meryl Streep’s daughter for ‘iconic’ way she came out to public

Meryl Streep’s daughter Louisa entered a ‘new era’, after hard-launching her girlfriend earlier this year, which fans have said is ‘a win for the girls’.

Louisa Jacobson Gummer, whom actress Meryl Streep shares with her ex-partner Don Gummer, came out earlier this summer.

Streep has always been vocal about championing the gay community, so it’s no surprise that Louisa made a special occasion of the announcement.

She chose to post on her mum’s birthday, which went down as a big hit with fans.

Speaking to Pride Source in 2016 about her support for queer people, she said: “I just can’t remember when LGBT people were not in my life.

“My piano teachers when I was 11 and 12 were two gay men in a little town in New Jersey who had a collection of Mexican art and pinatas and silver lantern covers, and their house was wonderful, not like anybody else’s house in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey.

“And yeah, I came of age when everything was kind of opening up and that’s a good time, right like now.”

She also won the Ally for Equality Award at the 2017 HRC Greater New York Gala.

Presenting the award, HRC President Chad Griffin said: “Throughout her phenomenal career, Meryl Streep has used her voice to stand up for the LGBTQ community.

“Whether through her iconic roles that raised the visibility of LGBTQ people, or by boldly speaking out for equality, Meryl Streep embodies the very nature of what it means to be an ally to our community.”

Prior to her girlfriend, Louisa was dating actor Jonathan Higginbotham in 2022, who she met at the Yale School of Drama.

Talking to Vanity Fair about what it’s like to date an actor, she said: “It’s always a tricky thing to navigate the different stages of one’s career.

“The imbalances that might exist during one time will flip and go the other way at another time.

“You just have to go with the flow and be really supportive of one another.”
