Christian McCaffrey has signed a two-year extension with the San Francisco 49ers to set a new salary record for running backs in the NFL.
The 27-year-old, who led San Francisco to the Super Bowl in 2023, has landed a deal worth $38million – $19m per season. The extension was first reported by ESPN.
McCaffrey reportedly arrived in Santa Clara for mandatory minicamp on Tuesday after 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan previously admitted he didn’t know why the running back skipped OTAs.
McCaffrey is the reigning offensive player of the year after rushing for 14 touchdowns and a career-best 1,459 yards in 2023.
He was already the highest-paid running back in the NFL, having signed a four-year, $64m extension back in 2020.

Second on the list is Alvin Kamara of the Saints. The five-time Pro Bowler makes $15m per year, after signing a five-year, $75 million extension in 2020.
According to ESPN, McCaffrey will now receive an extra $8m in the first two years – compared to his previous deal – while also adding $24m in guarantees. This extension is through the 2027 season.
Last month, Shanahan said he was unsure why McCaffrey skipped the beginning of OTAs.
The running back was not the only player to miss the workouts. Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings were also absent. However, Shanahan told media members he is ‘not too concerned’ by their absence
McCaffrey and quarterback Brock Purdy led the 49ers to a 12-5 record and a Super Bowl appearance, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
