Florida Gators quarterback Graham Mertz announced that he will forgo a medical redshirt and declare for the NFL draft despite suffering a season-ending ACL tear against Tennessee. Mertz expressed his readiness for the next chapter in his football career, feeling mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared for the challenges of the NFL.
Head coach Billy Napier confirmed the diagnosis after Mertz exited the game in the third quarter. Mertz revealed that the injury occurred on a scramble prior to his touchdown pass, initially feeling a pop but playing through it until the pain intensified on a subsequent throw.
He ended his final collegiate game with 125 passing yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions.

After a six-year collegiate career split between Wisconsin and Florida, quarterback Graham Mertz will transition into a coaching role with the Gators. Mertz, who threw for nearly 3,000 yards and a career-high 20 touchdowns in 2023, will be sidelined while recovering from upcoming surgery.
During his recovery, he will be present in meeting rooms and offer guidance to the Gators quarterbacks, including new starter DJ Lagway. Lagway, who threw for 98 yards and a touchdown in last week’s game, will be making his second career start against Kentucky this Saturday, with Mertz supporting from the sideline.
