Taylor bared her belly button for the world to see on Instagram in 2015, which exploded on Reddit, prompting users to generate a series of memes based on her pose and raised the question of whether she’d shown it off before.
One user on Reddit stated that until 2014, Taylor never showed her belly button – it was always those midriff-baring tops in the 1989 era.
“Because there was so much hype around seeing her belly button, such that a paparazzi photo of her in a bikini could go for a lot of money, Taylor decided to pose for a photo showing her belly button (with a fan) to normalise it,” the user wrote.
Other users debated that Tay had actually shown her belly button years prior to this in music videos when she was younger.
“I was just watching I‘m Only Me When I’m With You and voilà, there it is!” they wrote.

“Smh this mystery could have been solved long ago.”
Taylor herself then revealed to Lucky Magazine the real reason why nobody saw her belly button.
“I don’t like showing my belly button. When you start showing your belly button then you’re really committing to the midriff thing,” she confessed.
“I only partially commit to the midriff thing – you’re only seeing lower rib cage. I don’t want people to know if I have one or not. I want that to be a mystery,”
“As far as anyone knows based on my public appearances, they haven’t seen evidence of a belly button. It could be pierced. They have no idea. If I’m going to get some sort of massive tattoo, it’s going to be right next to my belly button because no one’s ever going to see that.”
