The Chicago Bears did exactly what everyone thought they did when they fired head coach Matt Eberflus after a horrendous last-second loss to the Lions.
Before this season, the Bears had never fired a coach during a season, but after the debacle on Thanksgiving, enough was clearly enough.
By now, you’ve seen what happened when the Bears let about 25 seconds run off the clock instead of calling a timeout in a 23-20 loss to the Lions.
Eberflus met the media Friday morning, and then sometime later, he would be headed to the unemployment line.
So, where do the Chicago Bears go from here?
If history tells us anything, their next head coach will have ‘Matt’ as a first name.
Social media detectives pointed out that the Bears have only hired people with the name Matt in the last seven years.
They also pointed to Houston Texans defensive coordinator Matt Burke as being a top candidate, just because of that fact alone.
As of now, offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will take over as the Chicago Bears’ interim head coach.
Matt Eberflus had a 14-32 record in nearly three seasons at the helm in Chicago.
Former Chicago Bears HC Matt Eberflus Felt Confident He Would Remain With The Team
This was the first time in Chicago’s more than 100-year history that the franchise had fired a head coach midseason.
Matt Eberflus likely knew that fact and thought he would remain in his position until the end of the season.
After the loss, Eberflus said he met with team president Kevin Warren and general manager Ryan Poles and told reporters he felt “confident” he’d be the Bears head coach moving forward.
“I talked to him about all the details about what the calls in terms of where we were and I thought the operation was good, just the penalties, I thought, put us behind the sticks a couple times there,” he said. “We were in scoring position and really could have owned the game from there.
