Chiefs HC Andy Reid inadvertently provides troubling injury update on LT D.J. Humphries after win over Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs are still evaluating their injured players following Sunday night’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid didn’t provide his usual postgame injury updates despite both CB Joshua Williams and LT D.J. Humphries leaving the game late. On Monday, he kicked off his media availability by speaking on the injury situation, explaining that he didn’t have any specifics to reveal at this time.

“I don’t have any injury updates for you,” Reid said before inadvertently delivering an injury update. “We’re right in the middle of that process, and we’ll just see how things go. So, I know the tackle [D.J. Humphries] is one of the problems there. So we’ll see how he does. He is feeling a little bit better this morning, but we’ll see where it goes from here after he gets an MRI.”

Now, the MRI might be alarming to some, but it’s rather commonplace for NFL players to get imaging done on injuries, no matter the severity. The trainers and medical professionals want to make sure that they don’t miss something that ultimately leads to a more substantial injury.

What did concern me about Reid’s comments was his usage of the word “problem.” Hopefully, with a normal week of preparation, Humphries can get right without missing much-needed practice time and reps.

As for Williams, Reid didn’t have much to say on his status. He did offer a glimmer of hope.

“Yeah, I don’t have that for you either,” Reid said. “He did come in feeling better today, but we’ve just got to get the evaluation. I’ll meet with Rick [Burkholder] here after we’re done and see where we’re at with all that.”

Humphries played 60 of 69 possible offensive snaps, while Williams played 38 of 60 possible defensive snaps in Week 14. Both players left the field in the fourth quarter of the game and did not return. Humphries was replaced by Wanya Morris. Williams was replaced by Nazeeh Johnson.

No matter how you dice it, the Humphries injury is unfortunate. He was just nine snaps away from making it through his first game in Kansas City without issue. If he’s limited at all during the practice week, it’s going to set him back in terms of learning and acclimating. If he misses time, it’d be absolutely back-breaking with a matchup against Browns DE Myles Garrett coming up in Week 15.

On the defensive side of the ball, it wasn’t long ago that Steve Spagnuolo said the team couldn’t afford another injury at the cornerback position. Any sort of missed time for Williams would be an equally difficult problem for Kansas City to have to overcome.
