Randi was just a 20-year-old when she had Patrick Mahomes. Five years later, Jackson joined them in 2000. But for Randi, the struggle was real. After her divorce in 2006, navigating motherhood and being a young adult needed consistency, even if it meant relying on her friends’ courtesies to take the Mahomes brothers to their games so that she wouldn’t miss a paycheck!
However, that’s one of her regrets. Not being there as much as she would want to. But she was a single mother battling financial and emotional adversities to raise her children. Over the years, things got better, and she had Mia Randall in 2011. But there was one dilemma. Her sons were much older than Mia, and managing them together was difficult.
On June 21, Randi appeared on the ‘The Mom Game Podcast‘ to discuss motherhood and how she managed things. The 52-year-old stated, “I’ve always told Patrick and then Jackson that they, you know, he was the man of the house and you know he had to be like the dad or be in charge… He [Patrick] is still that way with Jackson and with Mia. He’s very protective over them as a father would be.”
Considering the fact that there is a huge age difference between Patrick and Mia, she couldn’t parent them the same way. “I would say impossible, but I’ve got, I’m here now. It was a lot of hard work, but I did have some friends and, of course, Patrick and Brittany were there when I would work at night. I don’t know if they loved it but I was like, ‘here you go’ [handing Mia to Patrick and Brittany].
Randi has not disclosed the identity of Mia’s father. However, when it comes to Patrick Mahomes, there is one thing that makes her sad. She was quick to add that the QB probably did not want the kind of responsibility when he was quite young. Reflecting on her times of struggle, the event planner guiltily admitted, “I think it made them grow up probably quicker than I wanted them to.”
However, it doesn’t seem like she has much to worry about because, as per her own previous admission, though Patrick and Mia are 16 years apart, they share a sweet bond. The Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback regularly keeps tabs on his younger sister. And just like Patrick Mahomes, Mia loves football. At any given point in time, she knows who’s playing, and what’s their number.
All in all, it looks like things turned out the best for Randi Mahomes. Though being a young mother was not something she wished for, she believed it was God’s plan and did the best she could. In doing so, she also had to have some tough conversations with her kids.
Randi Mahomes reveals parenting challenges as a single mom
In the same podcast, Randi Mahomes revealed that she was always pretty “honest” with her children about the on-goings in her life. As she separated from the MLB star, Patrick Mahomes Sr, the mother sat down with her kids and explained the situation of their parents’ lives to them.
Although she asked them to “stay strong,” the QB ultimately had problems with his mom’s one specific demand during his college days. Mahomes joined the Texas Tech in 2014 after graduating from the Whitehouse High School. As he had started attending college, the young football player did not get much time to spend with his mom.
Whenever Mahomes did come home, he would spend time in his bedroom instead of talking to his mother. Hence, Randi came up with a solution! What was it?
She told her son, “If you are at church at Sunday, then we won’t argue… He’s stubborn sometimes.” Mahomes finally took his mother’s words to heart and started attending church on Sundays. But this wasn’t the only reason. Randi Mahomes’s website stated how important it was for her to raise her children in the Church.
It looks like the lessons Patrick Mahomes learned have stayed with the 3-time Super Bowl winner. Ahead of Super Bowl LVII, in February 2023, Patrick Mahomes revealed all of his decisions were driven by his “Christian faith.” As the QB is often heard saying, faith is a “part of everything I do.”
And it seems to have worked for him. Back when he was just 10 years old, he was disappointed simply because he didn’t get the position he wanted. But Randi didn’t let him quit. She pushed him to have more faith and focus. Today, he is a star.
Some of Patrick Mahmes’s achievements are:
1. He is the youngest player ever to win both- A league MVP and a Super Bowl title.
2. First player (in the 21 century) to win both- The league MVP and the Super Bowl MVP in the same season (2022).
3. At 24 years and 138 days (age), Patrick Mahomes became the third-youngest player and youngest quarterback in the NFL.
The list can go on and on. Potentially, the lessons he learned as a child helped Mahomes step on the biggest stage, while his family stood in unity. What do you think?
