An interesting NFC team has requested permission from the Dallas Cowboys to speak with Mike McCarthy for their head coaching vacancy.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Todd Archer, the Chicago Bears asked the Cowboys for permission to interview Mike McCarthy. The 61-year-old has completed his five-year deal with Dallas, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has yet to make a decision on McCarthy’s future with the team.
The Bears fired head coach Matt Eberflus after a 4-8 start and named Thomas Brown the interim HC. Chicago, however, failed to improve after the change and lost four of five games under Brown.
So the Bears’ brass is tasked with finding a new head coach to help promising young quarterback Caleb Williams, who turned in a tremendous rookie year despite being held back by inept coaching.
Mike McCarthy went 49-35-0 over his five seasons with the Cowboys. Despite leading them to two NFC East division crowns and three straight 12-win seasons (2021 to 2023), the Cowboys won just a single game under his watch.
Mike McCarthy Would Be An Interesting HC Choice For Bears
For all the hate he receives, folks can’t forget that McCarthy won a Super Bowl 45 championship ring with the Green Bay Packers and led them to four NFC Championship Games during his tenure.
And as bad as the Cowboys were in the postseason under McCarthy’s watch? He at least got the most out of them in the regular season, whereas predecessor Jason Garrett only had two seasons of 12-plus wins in TEN YEARS as the Cowboys head coach.
McCarthy hasn’t won a championship in a decade and a half, but his teams have constantly fielded top-10 offenses. Maximizing the talents of Williams, Rome Odunze and DJ Moore would be McCarthy’s main priority, and his track record suggests he could do just that.
