The Kansas City Chiefs have officially made a decision at the left tackle position for the AFC divisional round of the playoffs.
After an incredible three-game stretch from Week 15 through Week 17, Chiefs All-Pro LG Joe Thuney will remain kicked outside to left tackle. At least, that’s if we’re to believe what the Chiefs have shown during pregame warm-ups.
FOX 4 Kansas City’s Harold R. Kuntz captured the combination of Thuney at left tackle and Mike Caliendo at left guard based on those warm-ups.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid discussed the left tackle position on Thursday, indicating that he’d consult offensive line coach Andy Heck and the coaching staff to determine the best approach before making a decision.
“Yeah, I’m going to do the same thing,” Reid told reporters. “I’ve taken it this far. I’m going to get with the coaches and just make sure what they want and where we’re at with that, but they’ve (D.J. Humphries and Joe Thuney) both been in there. They’ve both been in there and done a nice job. It’s a good – that’s a positive thing.”
Asked whether Patrick Mahomes would have any say in the matter, Reid suggested his opinion would matter.
“Listen, he (Patrick Mahomes) likes both guys (D.J. Humphries and Joe Thuney),” Reid said. “He trusts those guys and that’s where he’s at, but I always keep that in mind, for sure.”
Thuney and Caliendo stabilized the offense when facing pass-rushers like Myles Garrett, TJ Watt, and even Texans stars Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson. During that span, Thuney allowed no sacks of Patrick Mahomes and just 14 pressures. Andy Reid’s decision could go down as one of the most important personnel choices in franchise history. Let’s hope they made the best call.
