ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided a stern warning about potentially drafting Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders that NFL GMs may want to consider.
Draft week is one of the busiest times for NFL Draft analysts like Adam Schefter, who gave fans a list of fascinating notes and tidbits on Monday. Among them: Whoever drafts Shedeur Sanders should be ready to deal with his father and former head coach, Deion Sanders.
Shedeur is the consensus No. 2 quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft behind Miami’s Cam Ward, who’s widely expected to go first overall to the Tennessee Titans. Scouts and analysts are divided on where Shedeur may land, but he’s a virtual lock to be a first-round pick.
In his updated draft notes, Adam Schefter warned that the coach of the team that drafts Shedeur should be ready for “speculation” about Deion Sanders replacing them as the HC if things go sideways:
“Now, at the NFL level, he will be without his father’s presence in football for the first time, and he will have to adapt to his new life the way some players do when they go from high school to college. This, in the eyes of some, will be an opportunity for Sanders to grow, continue to learn and take his game to an even higher level.
And then there’s this: Short of Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin, any other coach who drafts Sanders better be comfortable with his standing within the organization. Because if that team struggles and the fan base is calling for a coaching change, speculation will start to swirl about Sanders’ father taking over.”
Schefter also noted that though Coach Prime just signed a $54 million extension, the numbers for a potential contract buyout are as follows: $10 million in 2026, $6 million in 2027, $4 million in 2028 and then $3 million the following year.
QB-needy teams that may target Shedeur Sanders include the New York Giants (No. 3 pick), Las Vegas Raiders (No. 6), New Orleans Saints (No. 9) and Pittsburgh Steelers (No. 21).
