It appears that free agent running back Nick Chubb will play in the AFC.

Nick Chubb has been one of the top free agents available for almost three months now. But according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Chubb “is expected to” join the Houston Texans if he passes a physical on Monday.

If the former Cleveland Browns star signs with the Texans, he’ll join forces with fellow veteran and Pro Bowler Joe Mixon. The two faced off numerous times as division rivals in the AFC North, while Mixon played for the Cincinnati Bengals.

A four-time Pro Bowler, Nick Chubb missed most of the last two years after suffering a gruesome season-ending knee injury in Week 2 of the 2023 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Chubb spent most of 2024 recovering from the injury, rushing for 332 yards and three touchdowns in eight games.

Chubb rushed for over 1,000 yards in four straight seasons from 2019 to 2022, including a career-high 1,525 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 2022. Chubb has also posted over 1,100 yards of offense in each of his five healthy seasons.

Mixon remains the RB1 after a tremendous first season in Houston, but it never hurts to add a four-time Pro Bowler and touchdown machine as an understudy.

If Chubb can get close-ish to full health in 2025, he could re-emerge as a game-changing running back for the Texans. lf anything else, he’s an affordable veteran presence to help the Young Texans in their quest for a Super Bowl.
