The Spider-Man actor died suddenly at the age of 96.
The 2002 superhero story follows a shy teenager who is bitten by a genetically-modified spider, and gains spider-like abilities as a result, that he uses to fight injustice.
The New Jersey-born actor, who starred in Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man, died on June 19 at the age of 96.
The star, who also made a cameo in Friends, was born in Miami in 1929, and went onto study at the state’s university.
His acting career spanned many decades, after making his debut through Broadway’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard III, Far Out, upon completion of his theatre degree.
He was close friends with Everybody Loves Raymond star Doris Roberts, who he went onto share a house with, but died in his sleep at his home in Los Osos, California.
After Roberts’ death in 2016, the 96-year-old described the two as ‘best friends to the very end,’ and noted that they had shared ‘wonderful times together.’
Despite rumors that the two were an item, an Everybody Loves Raymond fan account clarified the reality of their relationship, posting on Instagram: “He was not Doris Roberts husband as has been reported elsewhere.”
But Spider-Man, which grossed a total of $821.7 million worldwide upon its release, wasn’t the only blockbuster that the actor went onto star in.
The 96-year-old also featured in a number of spaghetti western films, a sub genre of western films produced during the 1960s and 1970s – including Sugar Coat in 1966.
Fans of the star were devastated to learn of his death.
One says: “May his soul rest in peace and paradise.”
As another writes: “What a proud age to pass. A life well lived.”
A third adds: “NOT HENRY BALKAN NOOOOO,” as another says: “Well shoot, another Hollywood gunslinger rides into the sunset. Jack Betts was one of those actors who could make even a B-movie feel like an A-list production.’
Jack Betts’ nephew, Dean Sullivan, was the one to break the sad news on Thursday (June 19).
Betts played the character of Henry Balkan during the 2002 hit film.
Following the announcement being made public, Beverly Hills Playhouse, an acting school located in the region, released a heartfelt statement.
They said: “Our beloved Jack Betts passed away peacefully at home.
“It is a sad day for the BHP as we have enjoyed his presence for so many years.
“There are actors who credit him with not giving up because of his encouragement.
“We were so fortunate to have enjoyed his great spirit, passion and true dedication to the work.”
The company noted that there was only going to ever be ‘one of him’ and that theatre was made ‘richer’ by his life.
Betts appeared as the character of Tom, in the Friends episode ‘The One with Joey’s New Brain’.
But he also had memorable roles in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.
