Milan Bergamo Airport in Italy was the scene of a shocking and fatal accident, with a man getting sucked into the engine of a Volotea Airbus A319 while preparations were being made for it to leave for Spain on Tuesday morning.

The plane was scheduled to fly to Asturias when the incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. local time.

According to reports, the victim was not a registered passenger or airport employee. Initial findings suggest he breached security in a private vehicle and sprinted onto the tarmac after abandoning it.

The male, believed to be in his mid-30s, got dangerously close to the plane’s engine, which pulled him in. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Neither the airport nor Volotea has released information on the man’s identity amid the investigation, out of respect for the victim. Meanwhile, airline crew and other personnel who witnessed the tragic event have been offered counseling.

Operations were suspended at the Milan Bergamo Airport for around two hours while officials from Italy’s Civil Aviation Authority and local police examined the scene. The accident delayed or canceled at least 19 flights.

Authorities are still trying to piece things together as they seek to determine whether the victim purposely got himself killed or if he was dealing with a severe psychological flare-up.

As such, surveillance footage is being reviewed, with toxicology tests pending.

Volotea is fully cooperating with the investigation. The airline also made a short statement, offering condolences to the victim’s family.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and extend our sympathies to the victim’s family,” they said.

This is a developing story.
