One of the victims was 9-year-old Janie Hunt, a family member of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt. Her mother told CNN, “We are just devastated.” Ten girls and one counselor remain missing as rescue efforts continue.
Tavia Hunt, Clark’s wife, shared on Instagram: “Our hearts are broken… including a precious little Hunt cousin… How do we trust a God… who allows such terrible things to happen — even to children?” She added that scripture doesn’t avoid the hard questions, acknowledging the struggle in faith after such pain.
Other confirmed victims include Renee Smajstrla, Sarah Marsha, Eloise Peck, and Lila Bonner, all aged 8–9. Lila’s family said: “We ache with all who loved her and are praying endlessly for others to be spared from this tragic loss.”
