20-Year-Old HBCU Star Athlete Has Tragically Died

Student-athlete Macahri Washington-Parker has left Tuskegee University in mourning following his sudden and tragic passing at the age of 20.

According to reports, the junior is dead as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, although this has not been confirmed by university police.

Macahri, a member of the Golden Tigers baseball program, is remembered as a leader, mentor and friend. His influence is said to have extended far beyond the baseball field.

“We are heartbroken to learn of Macahri’s passing,” Tuskegee President and CEO Mark A. Brown said in a statement. “We will come together to uplift his family and each other during this time. I encourage everyone to seek counseling as needed and lean on each other for support.”

The 20-year-old was majoring in mechanical engineering and had athletic interests. Details of the incident in which he lost his life have not been made public.

Teammate Collin McLain described him as someone who left his mark on everyone he came across and was very active in school affairs as he served as he helped with student orientation and was part of other school boards.

“He was heavily involved across campus—serving as a new student orientation leader, sitting on various boards and always finding ways to contribute to the Tuskegee community,” McLain said.

The sophomore recalled first meeting the late student-athlete, noting that he immediately took him and other freshmen under his wing as he looked out for them and provided guidance on and off the field.

“His encouragement, laughter and kindness made a lasting impact on me, and I’m grateful for the time we shared,” he added.

The university is offering counseling to grieving students.

“While we understand the phrase ‘Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal,’ this loss has left an indelible mark on our family, friends, spiritual community, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated and Tuskegee University,” his family said in a statement from a Facebook post via the Georgiana Memorial Funeral Home.

“Our son was a remarkable young man whose light will forever shine brightly in the lives of many. Please pray for us as we continue to process our son’s untimely transition.”

Our hearts go out to Macahri Washington-Parker’s family, as well as his friends, loved ones, classmates, and teammates, as they mourn.

May he rest in peace.
