Hit on Justin Fields sparks wild brawl at SteelHit on Justin Fields sparks wild brawl at Steelers campers camp

We have a good old fashioned brawl at Steelers training camp.

After quarterback Justin Fields was hit on a run by defensive back Beanie Bishop and linebacker Elandon Roberts, rookie offensive linemen Mason McCormick and Troy Fautanu came to the quarterback’s defense and a melee ensued, according to multiple reports.

It is a known faux pas to hit a quarterback during camp, although the waters can be muddied a little when it’s a scramble.

The Steelers have been expected to start Russell Wilson over Fields to start the season, but Wilson has missed some time with a calf injury and Fields has reportedly impressed in his reps.

“We’ve got two really capable guys,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters earlier this week. “We’re going to create an environment where they get an opportunity to compete and see where they’re capable of.

“Justin has really taken advantage of the opportunity for additional snaps because Russ has been out some the first week. Really just excited about the trajectory of it. Excited to continue to go with the process and having them display their skills.”

Earlier this offseason, Tomlin had told reporters that Wilson was in “pole position” to land the starting job.

Pittsburgh was able to pick up Wilson on a veteran’s minimum “prove it” contract after he was released by the Broncos with $85 million in dead cap.

To acquire Fields, the Steelers traded a conditional sixth-round pick to the Bears.

The pick will become a fourth-rounder if Fields takes a majority of Pittsburgh’s snaps at quarterback this season.
