Los Angeles Chargers star Mekhi Becton might not be at a hundred percent for Friday night’s season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs in São Paulo, Brazil.

Ahead of his Chargers debut, Mekhi Becton posted an Instagram story photo of a hospital room with the caption, “DON’T EAT THE RICE AND BEANS IN BRAZIL BRO”. Becton added a pair of “sick” emojis to the story.

Becton was listed as “questionable” with an illness, but he has been cleared to play and will make his Chargers debut tonight. Chris Hayre of KCAL shared a video of the 2020 first-round pick taking warmups two hours before kickoff:

After winning a Super Bowl 59 championship with the Philadelphia Eagles last season, Mekhi Becton signed a two-year deal with the Chargers worth $20 million, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Kris Rhim.

With superstar offensive tackle Rashawn Slater out for the entire season (he suffered a torn patellar tendon in practice), the Chargers will count on Becton to sustain the strong performance of this offensive line that helped Jim Harbaugh’s group to a surprise 11-win season and playoff appearance.

On the Chiefs’ injury front, rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals is sidelined with a knee injury.

Mekhi Becton Aims To Help Chargers Snap Losing Skid vs. Chiefs

The Chargers haven’t defeated the Chiefs since Week 3 of the 2021 season, the first year of the roller-coaster Brandon Staley era. Kansas City won the final meeting in 2021 and has swept the season series every year since 2022.

For the Chargers, the priority is to run the ball effectively and keep Justin Herbert upright against a vaunted Kansas City front seven. If Mekhi Becton and Joe Alt can win their individual matchups, the Bolts definitely have the opportunity to pull off the upset.
