The Indianapolis Colts have signed a notable quarterback after placing backup Anthony Richardson on the injured reserve.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Colts signed veteran journeyman Brett Rypien to their practice squad. Anthony Richardson was placed on the injured reserve with an orbital eye fracture that he suffered during warmups in an unfortunate accident with an elastic band.
Daniel Jones, who’s in the midst of a career year, remains the starting quarterback. Rookie Riley Leonard, a sixth-round pick out of Notre Dame, will be the No. 2 quarterback behind Jones.

The nephew of former Washington quarterback and Super Bowl champion Mark Rypien, Brett Rypien has started four games over his NFL career. He went 2-1 as the Denver Broncos’ starter and made one start for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023 (a 20-3 loss to the Green Bay Packers).
Per Pro Football Reference, Rypien has completed 58.3 percent of pass attempts for 950 yards, four touchdowns and nine interceptions. We’ll see if he stays on Indianapolis’ roster after Richardson returns.
Anthony Richardson
In August, the Colts announced that Daniel Jones would be the starting QB over Anthony Richardson. The No. 4 pick of the 2023 NFL Draft has been mentioned aplenty in trade rumors, but Indy hasn’t received an offer for its liking.
Obviously, the Colts made the right call with Jones. The No. 6 pick of the 2019 NFL Draft has led Indy to victories in five of its first six games, throwing for 1,502 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions to go along with four rushing TDs.
Richardson needs a fresh start, and he’s been widely mentioned in trade rumors since losing the starting job to Jones. As Jones, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield have shown, a highly talented but underachieving quarterback just needs a new home to get their career on track.
