The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back an old friend and two-time Super Bowl champion, Mike Pennel, for their latest championship push.
On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs announced that they signed Mike Pennel and waived defensive end Malik Herring. The 34-year-old Pennel appeared in eight games for the Cincinnati Bengals before he was released on Tuesday.
This is now Pennel’s third stint with Andy Reid and the Chiefs. The former CSU Pueblo star played for Kansas City from 2019 to 2020, winning a Super Bowl 55 championship ring with them in his first season there.

Pennel had brief stops with the Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons before returning to Kansas City in 2023. He won his second Super Bowl championship that year, helping the Chiefs complete their repeat with a 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers.
The Topeka, Kansas, native entered the NFL in 2014 when he signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent. He also had brief stints with the New York Jets and New England Patriots.

The Chiefs have a successful history of bringing back familiar faces. JuJu Smith-Schuster and Kareem Hunt played valuable roles in KC’s 2024 AFC Championship triumph, and now they’re bringing back Pennel to shore up the defense.

Per Pro Football Reference, Mike Pennel has suited up in 146 NFL games over 12 seasons. He has logged five sacks, four pass breakups, three forced fumbles and 246 combined tackles.
Pennel has also appeared in 17 playoff games, logging one pass breakup and 33 combined tackles. That championship pedigree and big-game experience will be embraced by a Kansas City team that has oftentimes struggled to stop the run this season.
The 5-3 Chiefs will look to improve to 6-3 on the season when they visit Josh Allen and the archrival Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
