The Green Bay Packers have released veteran quarterback Jacob Eason ahead of their preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.
On Monday, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst announced that the team has cut Jacob Eason, less than two weeks after he was signed to their roster. That leaves three QBs on the depth chart: Jordan Love, Sean Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt.
Love is coming off a breakout season that ended with a close loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round. The Packers handed Love a lucrative four-year contract extension worth $220 million days after signing Eason to their roster.
Clifford, a 2023 fifth-round pick out of Penn State, is currently the No. 2 quarterback on the Packers’ depth chart. Behind him is Pratt, whom the Packers selected in the seventh round at No. 245 overall.

Jacob Eason was a fourth-round pick (No. 122 overall) by the Indianapolis Colts in 2020. There was initially some hope that the Washington product would be able to succeed Philip Rivers as the team’s starting QB, but he only attempted five passes in his one-and-a-half seasons in Indy.
Eason also spent time on the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants. But he’s seen very limited NFL action, attempting 10 total passes over his tenures with the Colts and Panthers.
Jacob Eason Should Find A Better Landing Spot
Eason was obviously never going to challenge Jordan Love for the QB1 job, and Matt LaFleur seems high on Clifford as his QB2. And though he was a seventh-round pick, Green Bay would probably prefer not to give up on Pratt without seeing some playing time (preseason or regular season).
The Packers will kick off their 2024 regular season against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 6 in São Paulo — the first NFL game that will be played in Brazil.
