Tragedy overshadows the Winter Olympics.
There are no words that can adequately express the depth of grief happening at the Winter Olympics.
Three skiers have been killed in a tragic avalanche near the Olympic Games. The incident went down over the weekend. They were killed by avalanches in northern Italy while skiing in the same alpine region currently playing host to the Winter Olympic Games.
Alpine rescue services recovered the body of a man from Punta Rocca, a 10,800-foot peak on Marmolada—the tallest mountain in the Dolomites. The three skiers died following two avalanches in Italy on Feb. 7.
Their deaths came days before Lindsey Vonn crashed and had to be airlifted to the hospital.
More On The Deceased Skiers Near The Winter Olympics
Three skiers were killed in avalanches in Italy near where several 2026 Winter Olympic events are taking place. Two avalanches hit the mountainous regions of Trentino, Alto Adige, and Lombardy over the weekend.
The skiers were said to be skiing off-piste, which means skiing on unpatrolled terrain outside the designated ski resort runs, per Reuters.
One of the bodies recovered was a man skiing at Punta Rocca. He was buried under the snow after causing the avalanche. The other people he was with were unharmed, according to the publication. However, another two bodies were recovered in the small town of Albosaggia. The identities of the three victims have not been released at this time.
Both avalanches occurred a few hours after the men’s and women’s alpine skiing competitions were held for the Winter Olympics.
