NBC Forced To Pull Footage And Apologize For Controversial Comments About Transgender Olympian

NBC made a huge mistake with one athlete at the Winter Games.

Freestyle skier Elis Lundholm is receiving a huge apology from NBC this week. The 2026 Winter Olympics are barely a week old, and many things have happened in such a short time.

We’ve had multiple athletes break their Gold medals shortly after winning, only to get them replaced. Then there were shocking moments as the world watched Lindsey Vonn crash and be airlifted away.

Throughout the Olympics, NBCUniversal has been delivering hours of coverage, with Peacock serving as the streaming home for every event live. Unfortunately for them, there was a major issue with some coverage, and they were forced to apologize.

Swedish athlete Elis Lundholm made history as the first openly gender-diverse participant to compete in the Winter Games. He took to the slopes on Wednesday’s women’s moguls qualifying event at Milano Cortina 2026. The 23-year-old, assigned female at birth, is also the only openly transgender athlete at the 2026 Games.

“I haven’t really thought about it that much,” the 23-year-old Swede told reporters after finishing 25th in the women’s moguls qualifying. “I’m here at the same conditions as everyone else, so yeah, I’m just skiing.”

NBC Apologizes To Elis Lundholm

NBCUniversal has issued an apology after Olympic commentators repeatedly misgendered transgender skier Elis Lundholm.

The trans man, the first trans skier to compete in the Winter Olympics, was competing in the women’s moguls first qualifying round on February 10. During a live stream of the qualifiers on NBC’s platform Peacock, one of the two commentators referred to Lundholm as “she,” per Outsports.

Even though he was born a woman, he identified as a male. The other member of the team took the safer route and used “they” rather than “he” in referring to Lundholm throughout the run. Lundholm uses he/him pronouns.

An NBCUniversal representative apologized for streaming the misgendering comments in a statement to Outsports on Tuesday.

“NBC Sports takes this matter seriously,” the representative said.

“Today, we streamed an international feed with non-NBCUniversal commentators who misgendered Olympian Elis Lundholm. We apologize to Elis and our viewers, and we have removed the replay of that feed.”

The feed has been removed from the network’s Olympic replay lineup.
