Listen don’t get me wrong, Marvin Harrison Jr. is the most talented player I’ve seen put on an Ohio State uniform since I popped out of my mother’s womb back in 1993. And when it’s all said and done, he might go down as the best Ohio State wide receiver to ever play in the pros….which is crazy because there’s a man that goes by the name of Cris Carter that wears a gold jacket and has his bust enshrined in Canton. I’m a Marvin Harrison Jr fan and believer and this is not a hit piece. But at the end of the day, Marvin Harrison Jr simply cannot be the “greatest wide receiver in Ohio State history” with an 0-3 record vs. Michigan.
But I guess before we even get to that, Marv wants to talk statistics. Fine, he has 155 catches (5th), 2613 yards (4th), 31 TD (3rd) in his 2 years as a starter and 3 years as a Buckeye. I don’t think you can go by simply by statistical production though, seeing as if you did that, Chris Olave 176 catches (2nd), 2711 yard (2nd), and 35 TD (1st) would probably be the goat? The fact of the matter is Ohio State has an unbelievable amount of receivers in the conversation, including: Michael Jenkins, David Boston, Marvin Harrison Jr, Chris Olave, Cris Carter, Garrett Wilson, Michael Thomas, Joey Galloway, Devin Smith, Santono Holmes, and Jeremiah Smith. And it’s tough to debate because the game has changed, our offense has changed, and each one had to play with a different QB. But one thing that has stayed in common for every single one of these Wide Receivers is that they all played Michigan. Marvin Harrison Jr went 0-3. Cris Carter went 1-2. And David Boston was 1-2. I hate to say it tarnishes their career but how does it not? My personal GOAT is Teddy Ginn Jr. I’ll admit I’m biased since he was the one I grew up watching, but he’s a 3x All-American (I know Returning was the main reason) and finished 3-0 vs. Michigan. Show me 1000 Marvin Harrison highlight reel catches and I’ll show you one clip:

Cry if you want to say he was returning a Punt there and not catching a ball, but there’s plenty of highlights to go around. And when I say plenty, I mean from all aspects of the game:
On This Date In Ohio State History – Nov. 6, 2004 – Ted Ginn Jr. scored three touchdowns – a 17-yard reverse, a 58-yard reception and a 60-yard punt return – to lead Ohio State to a 32-19 win at Michigan State.

He’s my goat. And if I ever needed to argue it vs. Marv, I’d point to the fact that he never lost to Michigan while Marvin could never beat them. And he left before he did. Don’t get me wrong, Marvin Harrison Jr made the proper career decision for himself to go pro now. But if he wanted to go down as the greatest Ohio State receiver EVER, he should’ve came back and said it was for one reason and one reason only: to Beat Michigan.
**Calling beating Michigan a team accomplishment is part of the reason Stalions has beaten us 3 years in a row. It is a team accomplishment, and it is also the most personal thing that any individual within the walls of that program should care about. I still walk around with my chest popped out because of my individual record against them. It’s a source of personal pride.
