ESPN host Sam Ponder has expressed mixed feelings about the discussions surrounding Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker.

Butker, known for his prowess as a Super Bowl-winning kicker, recently caused a stir with his comments during a speech at Benedictine College’s graduation ceremony. He made controversial remarks targeting Pride Month, transgender individuals, and women. His statements about women, in particular, captured widespread attention.
In his speech, Butker said, “I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you. Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”
Ponder, who has carved a successful career for herself in television, took to Instagram to share her views on the reactions to Butker’s remarks. “I think the petition that he should be fired from the Chiefs is totally un-American,” she stated. “Is a Catholic espousing traditionally Catholic views to a Catholic audience really that shocking?! Why can’t we just respectfully disagree?!
She added, “Personally, I found myself agreeing with some of Butker’s points, particularly the idea that many women find greater pride and joy in their families than in their careers. I love my job and have sacrificed a lot for it, even sleeping in my car to make ends meet. However, these sacrifices pale in comparison to how I feel about being a mom. ESPN will not be by my side on my deathbed. When did expressing such sentiments become offensive?
On the other hand, Ponder disagreed with Butker on other points. “I do not believe that my life only began when I became a wife and mother. It’s entirely possible to lead a fulfilling and purposeful life as a single woman in the workplace. Honestly, I believe I could have led an equally meaningful life had I not married or had children. I’m proud to live in a country where such beliefs can be openly shared.”
The NFL has officially distanced itself from Butker’s controversial comments, although it appears unlikely that he will face any disciplinary action.
