Payton Thorne recently offered some interesting advice to fellow Auburn quarterback Hank Brown. When asked by reporters what wisdom he would impart to the redshirt freshman, Thorne responded, “I’m gonna be talking to him about staying off his phone, quite honestly.” He went on to clarify that he doesn’t want Brown getting caught up in social media and outside opinions.
This comment came after Brown started in place of Thorne for two consecutive games. Brown’s first start came against New Mexico, followed by a game against Arkansas where he threw three interceptions before being pulled. Thorne took over for the remainder of the game.
Despite Thorne’s advice, his demeanor and the timing of his statement suggest a level of frustration with the situation.
Head coach Hugh Freeze has hinted that Thorne will likely remain the starting quarterback going forward. Following the Arkansas game, Freeze praised Thorne’s performance when he came in off the bench, saying, “Payton’s played solid.
He’s done it before. He’s played in these type of environments.
Payton’s played well to this point.”
Freeze seems committed to Thorne, but it remains to be seen how this quarterback situation will unfold throughout the rest of the season.
