If there’s one thing that Britain’s Got Talent excels at, it’s tugging at our heartstrings. Few performances have managed to do this as effectively as the Flakefleet Primary School choir from Lancashire.
Under the direction of headteacher Dave McPartlin, the choir entered the stage wearing vibrant costumes that signaled a delightful experience for the judges. One of the choir members, 7-year-old Megan, shared their reason for participating in Britain’s Got Talent, saying, ‘I love singing!’ Meanwhile, Mr. McPartlin humorously added, ‘Some are fantastic singers, while others are simply full of enthusiasm.’
The performance of Queen’s legendary song ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ that came next was truly chaotic. With vibrant costumes, props, and oversized masks of the judges’ faces, it’s no wonder the judges and the audience quickly stood up. It was definitely a show-stopping act, with Alesha Dixon declaring, ‘that was absolute chaos and a delight to witness!’ and Simon Cowell stating, ‘This is what Britain’s Got Talent represents to me.’
Judge David Walliams was the one most touched by the performance. He was brought to tears and exclaimed, ‘You’re just one of the most joyous things I’ve ever seen!’ Therefore, it was no surprise that Flakefleet Primary School was his Golden Buzzer act! Thanks to the Golden Buzzer, Flakefleet advanced directly to the live Semi-Finals, where they returned with another lively performance. This time, they amazed both the judges and the audience with their rendition of ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ by Bonnie Tyler.
Once again, the children donned a range of different costumes, and even Mr. McPartlin joined in on the fun! He kicked off the performance in a dress before switching to a superhero outfit. The judges and the audience were once more charmed, with Amanda Holden exclaiming, ‘you just bring so much happiness to us four, and the nation at large!’ while Simon remarked, ‘I think you have a chance of winning the whole show.’
Unsurprisingly, Flakefleet made it to the Final, where they performed ‘Rule the World’ by Take That in their typically delightful chaotic style. The show began with one child descending from the ceiling dressed as a star, while Mr. McPartlin appeared as the moon. Judge David Walliams expressed his admiration for his Golden Buzzer act, stating, ‘you’ve just reminded us all why the nation fell in love with you the first time around.’ In the end, they secured sixth place in the competition.
To this day, Mr. McPartlin remains the headteacher of Flakefleet Primary School! During the lockdown caused by the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, he continued to support students across the country by partnering with the BBC for a virtual home schooling program. Throughout this initiative, he conducted reading sessions along with bite-sized geography and history lessons. He is undoubtedly still spreading joy to the next generation!
