Heartfelt Prayers Flood In As Beloved Coach Found Dead At Gas Station

The Franklin County school community is in deep mourning this week after Tony Gill was tragically killed in a senseless act of violence.

Gill worked at Franklin County High School. He taught special education students and was a girl’s basketball coach. He was also an assistant football coach.

The beloved head coach was reportedly found dead on Sunday evening as a result of a shooting with a man who knew him.

The 46-year-old was found dead at a convenience store on West Gretna Road in Gretna, Virginia.

52-year-old James Richard Mattox has been arrested for the murder of Tony Gill. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unknown.

In a statement, the district said, “Whether in the classroom or on the court, Mr. Gill led with integrity, compassion, and unwavering commitment.”

One of Gill’s former football players texted his old head coach in disbelief.

“I texted him, I was like, yo, coach, is this true?” Jeffrey Hairston said per WDBJ.

“He was like, I’m sorry, yeah, it’s true. And I was like, and then it’s after that, after I seen that messages, I just started breaking down and crying because, you know, he just, he had such an impact on my life.”

Tony Gill coached Hairston all four years at Franklin County High School, and Hairston says while Gill was a great coach, he was an even better mentor.
