‘Heartbroken’ Mariah Carey Confirms Her Mum and Sister have both Died on the Same Day

Mariah Carey has shared her deep sorrow after the heartbreaking loss of both her mother and sister on the same day.

Patricia, who was married to Mariah’s father, Alfred Roy Carey, had three children: Alison, Mariah, and Morgan. The singer’s parents divorced when she was just three years old, a relationship Mariah explored in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. In the book, she reflected, “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities.”

She added, “It’s never been only black-and-white – it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”

Mariah dedicated part of her memoir to Patricia, writing, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

Speaking to People, Mariah confirmed the devastating news that her family had endured two tragic losses on the same day. The singer shared that both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, had passed away. She provided no further details on the causes of death and requested privacy during what she described as an “impossible time.”

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” she said. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Patricia, a trained opera singer and vocal coach, had previously performed alongside Mariah in the 2010 TV special Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You. The mother-daughter duo delivered a memorable performance of “O Come All Ye Faithful,” and at the end of the song, Mariah asked the audience to give “a big hand to my mother Patricia Carey.”

Mariah’s relationship with her sister Alison appeared to be strained as well. In her 2020 memoir, she mentioned that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with either her sister or her brother. The singer acknowledged that it has indeed been “a tragic turn of events” for her family.

“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment,” she wrote, highlighting the complexities of her familial bonds.

RIP.
