Fans were taken by surprise when Orlando Bloom referred to Katy Perry by her real name during his speech at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).
The unexpected moment occurred when Perry, 39, accepted the prestigious Video Vanguard award on Wednesday, September 11.
Kicking off his speech, Bloom said, “Give it up for our newest Video Vanguard, Katheryn Hudson,” and added, “You fell in love with her as Katy Perry, I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson.” He continued, “You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light, and her unique sense of humour into every song she writes and every music video she creates. I know her as a mother, as a partner who brings that same sense of love and joy to our family.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor, 47, who has been engaged to Perry since 2019 and shares a four-year-old daughter with her, concluded his tribute by saying, “She loves with her whole heart, and it’s kind of irresistible. Congratulations on this honour, baby, I’m so proud of you.”
Fans, however, were more focused on discovering that the singer’s real name isn’t Katy Perry. One viewer tweeted, “So I’m today years old when I learned that Katy Perry’s real name is not Katy Perry.” Another added, “I didn’t know Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry were married. I was so confused on why he was calling her real name.”
After receiving the award, the I Kissed a Girl singer humorously said, “Thank you, I did that all on my first day of my period, can you believe it?” She went on to thank MTV for supporting her “weirdness” from the beginning of her career, her fans, and the LGBTQ community.
In her speech, Perry also gave a heartfelt shout-out to Bloom, saying, “Thank you to Orlando for keeping me grounded, celebrated, and doing the dishes,” and ended with a sweet note to their daughter, “For my Daisy, the only flower I’ll ever need.”
