The police recently released body camera footage amid investigation after actor Gene Hackman’s death.
As per the footage released, the scene provides significant insights into the situation that unfolded following their tragic passing.
The couple was found dead in their Santa Fe home in February. According to reports, Betsy died first from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease transmitted by rodents. However, Gene succumbed to heart disease complicated by Alzheimer’s disease several days later.
The couple had three dogs, but one of them, Zinna, was also found dead in a cage, likely due to dehydration and starvation. The other two dogs remained on the property, with one discovered near Betsy’s body and the other outside.
The body camera footage confirmed the locations of these dogs and included sightings of one running in the wooded hills on their property.
A dog trainer who interacted with the authorities described the couple as – very devoted to their dogs. He detailed about the Oscar winner actor’s profound love for his pets, evident during his final moment of life.

Recently released police body cam footage highlights the emotional aftermath of the tragic deaths of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and their dog Zinna.
Elizabeth, Hackman’s daughter, expressed her heartbreak and made a request regarding her deceased family members.
In the February 27 footage, just a day after the grim discovery, Elizabeth requested to cremate Zinna, their deceased dog, alongside her stepmother, Betsy. She also asked for the dog’s collar to be preserved if it was still intact.
As per the investigation reports, Zinna died in the bathroom closet. She tragically passed away from starvation and dehydration prior to authorities’ arrival, as confirmed by an autopsy. Her body showed signs of partial mummification, though no evidence of poisoning, disease, or trauma was found.
Gene Hackman is survived by his three children from a previous marriage: Elizabeth, 63; Leslie, 58; and Christopher, 65. The couple lived a private life, and their passing has been met with deep sorrow from the community and family.
