A Penn State Nittany Lions used a genius tactic to cheat ESPN’s Pat McAfee out of $300,000 in the latter’s “College GameDay” kicking contest.
As every college football fan knows, Pat McAfee hosts a kicking challenge on ESPN’s “College GameDay” program. If the chosen fans can make a 33-yard field goal (the same distance as an NFL extra point), McAfee will give them a giant cash prize out of his own pocket.
This week, McAfee and the “College GameDay” crew set up shop at Penn State ahead of the Nittany Lions’ home game against the Oregon Ducks. The student chosen for today’s kick challenge was a finance major student named William, but there was a twist on this one.
Though William won the raffle, he told McAfee that he “sucks” at kicking. McAfee let William pick another person to kick on his behalf, and the student settled on a former high school soccer star named Carson Albright:
McAfee offered a total payout of $300,00 if Albright made the kick, with both William and Carson taking home $150,000. Sure enough, Carson made the life-changing kick with relative ease:
Hey, McAfee agreed to it.
Pat McAfee Is In His Third Year At ESPN
McAfee was able to get out of his contract at FanDuel TV to sign a lucrative five-year deal with the Worldwide Leader in Sports worth a reported $85 million. So far, McAfee has been worth just about every penny for ESPN.
He has faced backlash for some of his controversial takes (such as the opinion that fans won’t mind commercials being on “NFL RedZone”) and letting Aaron Rodgers float vaccine misinformation on his show.
But McAfee has delivered giant ratings and remains one of the network’s marquee stars. “The Pat McAfee Show” still draws millions of viewers.
